What you get for free
Anyone with a Google account can use the Gemini app on the web, Android and iPhone. Free users get chat, image understanding, limited image creation and some Deep Research. Starting October 9, 2026, Google was reported to limit free users without a paid plan to its lighter Flash-Lite model, with the stronger Flash and Pro models reserved for paid plans.
Google AI Plus vs AI Pro
Google AI Plus (about $8/month in the US, varies by country) adds the Flash model, double the usage and extra storage. Google AI Pro ($19.99/month in the US) adds the Pro model, much higher limits, a 1-million-token context window and 2 TB+ of storage. AI Ultra is for heavy users.
Students
Google has run offers giving eligible students AI Pro free for a year. Check Google's student page for current availability in your country.
