What you get for free
The free plan gives you ChatGPT's default model on the web, iPhone and Android apps. In August 2026 OpenAI was reported to have removed the cap on ordinary text messages for free users, while keeping limits on heavier features. Image creation, file and photo uploads, data analysis and deep research are all available on the free plan but with small allowances that reset over time.
Where the limits are
- Heavy features: images, uploads and deep research run out first. When they do, you wait for the allowance to reset.
- Model choice: paid plans get the more capable reasoning models and a model picker.
- Ads: OpenAI started showing ads to free users in some countries in 2026. Go also has ads; Plus and above don't.
Free vs Go vs Plus
Go (around $8/month, availability varies by country) raises the limits on images and uploads. Plus ($20/month) adds the stronger reasoning models, higher limits everywhere and no ads. If you only chat a few times a day, the free plan is enough.
Do some ChatGPT jobs free, without an account
For a few common tasks you don't need ChatGPT at all. Our no-sign-up tools run in your browser: summarize an article, translate text, or copy text out of a screenshot, with nothing uploaded.
