How to remove a background in 3 steps
- 1
Add your photo. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP into the box, paste a screenshot, or tap to pick one from your phone.
- 2
Wait a few seconds. The first time, your browser downloads the AI model (about 25 MB). After that it loads instantly, even offline.
- 3
Pick a background and download. Keep it transparent for logos and listings, or pick white, black or any color for profile photos.

Tips for a cleaner cutout
- Use a photo where the subject is in focus and clearly separated from the background.
- Even light helps. Hard shadows are sometimes read as part of the subject.
- Hair and fur come out best on larger photos, so don't shrink your image first.
- For marketplace listings, choose white and leave some space around the product.
How it works, and why your photo stays private
Most background removers upload your photo to a server and charge credits for the full-size download. This one doesn't. When you open the page, an open-source image segmentation model (MODNet, run with Transformers.js) loads into your browser. Your own computer or phone works out which pixels belong to the subject and makes the rest transparent.
Because nothing is uploaded, there's no account, no queue and no size cap beyond what your device can handle. You can check this yourself: open your browser's network tab and you'll see the model download, but never your image.
What it's not good at
No background remover gets every photo right. This model is tuned for people and clear subjects, so expect rough edges with glass, smoke, very fine hair, and objects the same color as the background. Older phones can take 10 to 20 seconds per photo. For tricky product shots, a photo taken against a plain wall makes a big difference.

Questions
Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There's no sign-up, no credits and no watermark. Because the work happens on your device, it costs us nothing extra when you use it more, so there's no daily limit.
Do you upload or keep my photos?
No. Your image is processed inside your browser and never sent to our servers. Only the AI model is downloaded, once.
Can I use the result commercially?
Yes, the photo and the cutout are yours. The MODNet model is released under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows commercial use.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in a recent version of Safari or Chrome. Large photos take longer on older phones.
Why is the first run slower?
The first time, your browser downloads the AI model (about 25 MB). It's saved in your browser's cache, so later visits start right away.
