What you get for free
The free plan includes chat on the web, desktop and mobile apps, web search, file and image uploads, Projects and artifacts. In early 2026 Anthropic also brought file creation and app connectors to the free plan. You get a capable everyday model, but not the most powerful one.
How the free limit works
Claude doesn't publish a fixed message count for the free plan. Usage is measured in a rolling five-hour window and depends on message length, attachments and demand. Long documents and long conversations use up your allowance faster. When you hit the limit, you'll see when it resets.
When Pro is worth it
Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed yearly) gives roughly five times the free usage, access to the most capable models, and Claude Code for programming. Max plans (from $100/month) are for very heavy use.
